General group session · 4–12 students
Preparing for a general group session about your career
In the group session you take part in a small group with other students who – just like you – want to reflect on the future, their options and their next steps. You may not know each other, but you share an interest: thinking further about specialisation, the degree project or working life after graduation.
To get as much as possible out of the session you need to prepare a little. You do not have to submit anything, but bring your notes as a basis for the conversation.
The purpose of your preparation
- Get a clearer picture of your own thoughts
- Be ready to contribute to the discussion
- Recognise yourself in others' reasoning – or be inspired by new perspectives
- Give yourself a chance to put your thoughts into words, even if they are unclear
Prepare for the general group session
Before the session you need to think things through a little. The goal is not to have the "right answers" – it is to bring some thoughts, ideas or questions you want to explore together with others.
This is how you do it:
- Read through the questions below.
- Choose the parts that feel most relevant to you – you do not have to answer everything.
- Write down your answers or thoughts as bullet points – on a computer, phone or paper.
- Bring your notes to the session – they become your basis for the discussion.
Reflect and write down
IGeneral thoughts about the future
- Which questions or choices are you thinking about most right now?
- What feels difficult, unclear or challenging in your studies or your future path?
- What do you hope to take away from the session?
IIAbout specialisation
- Is there a specialisation in your programme that you are unsure about or curious about?
- What appeals to you in certain directions – subjects, career opportunities, personal development?
IIIAbout the degree project
- Do you have ideas or areas of interest for what you would like to write your degree project about?
- Is there something you want to explore in depth – within technology, societal issues, sustainability, etc.?
IVAbout working life
- What do you think about life after graduation – what do you dream of?
- Is there a particular industry, role or type of employer that feels interesting?
VAbout yourself
- Which three qualities do you think describe you as a person or student?
- Which two things would you like to develop or improve during your studies?
- What do you think you can contribute in the future – to a workplace, a team or society?
Tips
- You do not need finished answers – many are in the middle of their process, and that is fine.
- The most important thing is that you understand your own thinking, so keep it simple and use bullet points.
- Bring your notes to the session – they help you get started in the discussion.
Welcome to a conversation where you get to explore your possibilities together with others – in an open, curious and supportive way. The group session is led by study and career adviser Joakim Cao.
